Book Review: Dog With a Bone by Hailey Edwards

October 6, 2015

Half-bloods with Thierry’s skill set are given two options. They can join the conclave’s marshal program, or they can pack their bags. Turn down the job offer, and you’ve just shredded your residency pass for the mortal realm and booked yourself a one-way ticket to Faerie.

Texas is the only home Thierry has ever known, and she’s not going anywhere. Even if it means following in her notorious father’s footsteps as a peacekeeper. But pinning on the badge opens her eyes to the fact sometimes fae need protection too, and that sometimes humans are the real monsters.

This was my second foray into indie Urban Fantasy, and I have to say I was definitely not disappointed! Thierry is my kind of heroine – she's kickass, has a smart mouth and unique powers, but is surprisingly mature compared to other heroines of the genre.

This novel is actually a prequel to “Heir of the Dog” and was written after it to show more of the origins of Thierry and Shaw's relationship. Man do those two have chemistry! As to the book itself, shortly after graduating from the Academy and starting life as a Marshall, Thierry and Shaw get put on the trail of a pair of humans who are killing rare fae. The journey forces Thierry to confront some of her heritage and become used to using her powers, as well as the fact that the world isn't black-and-white and sometimes humans can be just as monstrous as the fae.

You MIGHT want to start with “Heir of the Dog” instead of this book since it's technically the first one… but you don't have to because I started with this one and I understood everything just fine. The world-building is top-notch, the characters are awesome, and the plot has lots of twists and turns that'll keep you guessing until the end.

Just discovered your website!
Great review. I’ll definitely be adding this to my TBR (though it has way too many books already)!
